
Dr. Hilla Karas
CV
Dr. Hilla Karas completed all her academic degrees at Tel Aviv University: a Bachelor's degree with distinction in French and Linguistics (also a Rector’s List honoree), a Master’s degree with highest distinction in French Language and Literature, and a PhD in French Language and Literature. Her doctoral dissertation, titled The Status and Function of Translations from Old French into Modern French, was written under the supervision of Prof. Hava Bat-Zeev Shyldkrot (Tel Aviv University) and Prof. Lieven D’hulst (KU Leuven, Belgium).
During her doctoral studies, she was awarded the President’s and Rector’s Fellowships at Tel Aviv University. Thanks to a scholarship from the Belgian government, she spent a year studying at KU Leuven under the supervision of Prof. Lieven D’hulst. She was also a fellow at the Porter Institute’s Doctoral Forum at Tel Aviv University.
From 2017 to 2020, Dr. Karas received a personal research grant from the Israel Science Foundation (ISF), together with Prof. Hava Bat-Zeev Shyldkrot, for a project titled Intralingual Translation: from Old French into Modern French. Through the Text and Beyond. In 2020, she was awarded another ISF grant for an international research workshop, again with Prof. Bat-Zeev Shyldkrot, on Intralingual Translation: Language, Text and Beyond.
Dr. Karas is currently the sole Principal Investigator of a second ISF-funded research project (2024–2027), titled Translation and Migration in Crisis: FSU Immigrant-Interpreters in Israel as a Case Study, carried out in collaboration with research associate Dr. Tanya Voinova
Dr. Karas has translated works of philosophy and critical theory from French into Hebrew, including texts by Julia Kristeva, Roland Barthes, Jacques Derrida, Marcel Mauss, and others. Until 2012, she taught at Tel Aviv University, Beit Berl College, Lifshitz College, and the Academic College of Tel Aviv-Yaffo. Between 2020 and 2023, she served as Chair of the Department of Translation and Interpreting Studies at Bar-Ilan University.
From 2019 to 2021, Dr. Karas co-led the interdisciplinary research group Cultural Perceptions of Emotions in the Middle Ages and Early Modern Period with Prof. Tovi Bibring.
Since 2016, she has served as the secretary of ILASH, the Israeli Association for Applied Linguistics. She is also a member of the international editorial board of Perspectives: Studies in Translation Theory and Practice and a member of the editorial board of the Hebrew-language journal Heksherei Lashon.
