Prof. Francine Kaufmann

Born in Paris in 1947, Prof. Francine Kaufmann holds a bachelor and master degree in French literature and theatre, and a Ph.D. from the University of Paris X-Nanterre on the Holocaust literature. Also, she graduated Hebrew studies and literature at the School of Oriental Language in Paris and at the University of Lille, and later, communication studies at the University of Boston. She taught 5 years in French universities (Paris III and Paris VIII, ENLOV) before making Aliah to Jerusalem (October 1974). At Bar-Ilan, she taught mainly Translation and Interpretation from Hebrew into French (1974-2011) and an MA seminar in Jewish Translation. She was twice the Head of the department. She is a researcher and an essayist. She translates Hebrew Poetry into French, has arranged and published three Anthologies. As an AIIC interpreter, she has worked for international conferences and other official settings (Sadat’s visit to Jerusalem, the Madrid Conference, State and official visits, mainly in Israel and in France) and has interpreted from Hebrew in films by Claude Lanzmann, Shoah and Sobibor. She wrote hundreds of essays and academic articles on Jewish and biblical translations and interpretation, translation and media, as well as on the Literature of the Shoah, especially on the literary project of André Schwarz-Bart, on which she has published a book "Rereading The Last of the Just : thoughts on the Jewish Holocaust" (1986). She edited a special issue of the Canadian Journal Meta, about “Translation in Israel” (1998).
